About Us!

We will be the light of Jesus by reflecting God on life’s path. We embrace our church family and community with love, friendship, and kindness as we build relationships with those whom we work, live, and play. In our discipleship we are leading others to Christ by living the life we teach. Our goal is to mentor people through the Christian journey by establishing a strong foundation in Christ.

Church members have formed multiple internal teams to make our mission a reality and keep each other accountable.

Our History

In 1977, two churches became one. The 103 year old Venable Baptist Church, the seventh oldest church in Richmond, merged with the 18 year old Westhill Baptist Church. Thus, on October 1, 1977, Mechanicsville Baptist Church was chartered and organized with 1,306 members; and on Sunday, October 2, 1977 the combined congregations met for their first service with Rev. Don Stewart as the pastor.

Other notable events include building the Family Life Center in 1982, and in 1986 the church opened a Daycare Center. This ministry met a great need in the community through 2020.

In 1989, the church renovated the Alpha House to be used as a home for furloughing missionaries. In the 1990’s many of our men and women were trained to serve as volunteers on the Virginia Baptist Disaster Feeding Unit.  In 2002, the church determined that a second worship service would allow for growth, so the contemporary service began and continues today. Mechanicsville Baptist Church began with a strong emphasis in missions, and continues to be Jesus’ hands and feet locally and abroad.

Our Beliefs

We believe the Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is the record of God’s revelation of Himself to man. It is a perfect treasure of divine instruction. It has God for its author, salvation for its end, and truth, without any mixture of error, for its matter. It reveals the principles by which God judges us; and therefore is, and will remain to the end of the world, the true center of Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and religious opinions should be tried.

A New Testament church of the Lord Jesus Christ is a local body of baptized believers who are associated by covenant in the faith and fellowship of the gospel, observing the two ordinances of Christ (baptism and the Lord’s Supper), committed to His teachings, exercising the gifts, rights, and privileges invested in them by His Word, and seeking to extend the gospel to the ends of the Earth.

This church is an autonomous body, operating through democratic processes under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. In such a congregation members are equally responsible. Its Scriptural officers are pastors and deacons.
